If you have high-porosity curls, you know the struggle: your hair drinks up moisture in seconds… and then spits it back out just as fast. So you get frizz, dullness, and that “dried out by lunchtime” feeling even after a good wash day.
As someone who has curly hair, I understand your struggles very well. I’ve tried loads of different products, but realised that the right combination of carrier oils plus essential oils actually deliver the best results and can make a huge difference for high-porosity hair.
They will not “fix” your porosity, but will support your strands so they stay smoother, softer and more defined for longer between washes. That’s exactly why I created these oil blends specifically for high-porosity curls following the Curly Girl Method.
So keep on reading and you’ll discover 5 essential oil blends designed especially for:
- Those who follow Curly Girl Method (CGM)
- Those who have High-porosity curls that lose moisture quickly
- People who want natural yet effective solutions
All blends’ ingredients are listed so you can easily recreate them using products from either Aromantics and Tisserand through the affiliate links I have attached. There’s also Amazon shopping option if you prefer to shop there.
High-Porosity Curls: Why Oils Help
High-porosity hair has a lifted, more “open” cuticle layer. That means water and products get in fast, but they also escape fast, leaving your hair rougher and more prone to frizz and breakage.
Oils can help in three key ways:
- They fill in the gaps along the strand and smooth down raised cuticles.
- They create a light protective film that slows down water loss.
- Some, like Argan Oil, can help protect against oxidative and physical damage, reducing long-term breakage.
The trick, especially if your hair is high-porosity and fine, is choosing oils that protect without smothering your curl pattern.
That’s why these blends lean on Grapeseed, Argan and Jojoba oils, and a little Castor or Avocado oils, only where it makes sense.
Blend 1: Anti-Frizz Daily Sealant for High-Porosity Curls
This is your everyday, “keep things smooth without weighing everything down” blend.
I like it on damp hair after leave-in and gel, especially if you live somewhere windy or humid.
Why it works
- Grapeseed oil is light and rich in linoleic acid, which helps with softness and elasticity without feeling greasy.
- Argan oil adds shine and helps protect the hair shaft from oxidative damage and micro-fractures that lead to breakage.
- Jojoba oil mimics your natural sebum and helps with frizz and smoothness.
- A touch of Lavender essential oil adds scalp-soothing benefits and a calming scent.
Recipe (approx. 30 ml)
- 15 ml Grapeseed oil
- 10 ml Argan oil
- 5 ml Jojoba oil
- 6–8 drops Lavender essential oil
How to apply (CGM-friendly)
- On wash day, style as usual with your leave-in and gel on soaking-wet hair.
- Emulsify 2–3 drops of the blend between your hands.
- Gently scrunch into mid-lengths and ends only, avoiding the roots to keep volume.
- If you diffuse, do it on low heat/low speed afterwards.
I’ve found that using this as the very last step gives you that soft, flexible cast and helps curls stay glossy for 2–3 days, especially in frizz-prone weather.
Blend 2: Overnight Repair Oil for Parched Ends
High-porosity hair often has “crispy” ends that frizz no matter what you do.
This richer night blend focuses only on the last few centimetres of your hair so your roots and lengths don’t feel coated.
Why it works
- Avocado oil is a medium-weight oil that pampers very dry lengths.
- Argan oil supports elasticity and protects against oxidative damage.
- A tiny amount of Castor oil helps hold moisture on those fragile, older ends.
- Sweet Orange or Ylang-Ylang essential oil adds shine and a spa-like scent without being too stimulating at night.
Recipe (approx. 20 ml)
- 8 ml Avocado oil
- 8 ml Argan oil
- 4 ml Castor oil
- 4–6 drops Sweet Orange or Ylang-Ylang essential oil
How to apply without wrecking your curl pattern
- On non-wash nights, lightly mist your ends with plain water or a water-based refresher.
- Warm 1–2 drops of the blend between your palms.
- Gently “prayer hands” the oil over the last 5 cm of your curls, then lightly scrunch.
- Sleep on a satin pillowcase or wear a loose pineapple and satin bonnet.
In the morning, your curls should feel softer and look less frazzled at the ends without that heavy, oily look.
Blend 3: Rosemary & Lavender Scalp Support for Stronger Roots
This one is for you if your high-porosity curls also feel a bit thin at the roots or you’re worried about shedding.
We’re keeping the base light and the essential oils gentle but evidence-informed.
Why it works
- Rosemary essential oil has been shown in human trials to improve hair thickness, density and hair fall.
- A Rosemary–Lavender combination has also improved hair growth rate and reduced hair fall.
- Jojoba and Grapeseed keep the blend light enough for the scalp, so it doesn’t feel sticky or clogging when used sensibly.
Recipe (approx. 30 ml)
- 15 ml Jojoba oil
- 15 ml Grapeseed oil
- 10 drops Rosemary essential oil
- 8 drops Lavender essential oil
How to use it (without upsetting your CGM routine)
- Choose a pre-wash day.
- Use the dropper to apply small amounts to your scalp in rows – focus on areas that look sparse.
- Using your fingertips massage in small circles for 5 minutes, no nails.
- Leave on for 30–60 minutes or overnight if your scalp tolerates oils well.
- On wash day, use your usual CGM-approved cleanser to wash thoroughly, focusing on the scalp.
I’ve found that once or twice a week is plenty. You’re supporting circulation and scalp comfort without adding so much oil that you end up fighting buildup or needing harsh clarifiers.
Blend 4: Wash-Day Shine & Definition Booster
This blend is for those days when your curls look dull or “puffy” after styling, even though you’ve done everything “right.”
It’s lighter than the night blend and perfect as part of your LCO (liquid–cream–oil) or LOC (liquid–oil–cream) routine.
Why it works
- Argan oil brings shine and protects against oxidative and physical damage, which is especially helpful if you diffuse or live in a sunny climate.
- Sunflower or Safflower oil helps seal in moisture without a greasy feel and works well on high-porosity hair.
- A touch of Roman Chamomile or Geranium essential oil can support scalp comfort and add a soft, floral scent.
Recipe (approx. 30 ml)
- 15 ml Argan oil
- 15 ml Sunflower or Safflower oil
- 6–8 drops Roman Chamomile or Geranium essential oil
How to apply on wash day (CGM-friendly)
- After rinsing out your conditioner, apply your leave-in and curl cream/gel as usual on soaking-wet hair.
- Before you start diffusing, emulsify 2–3 drops of the blend in your hands.
- Lightly glaze over the outer canopy and scrunch upwards, focusing on frizz-prone areas.
- Diffuse on low heat/low speed, or air dry.
Used sparingly, this can give you that “glass curl” shine, especially on medium to high-density hair that tends to look matte.
Blend 5: Between-Wash Refresh Spray for Frizz-Free Second Day Curls
This blend is perfect for those in-between wash days when your curls feel a bit frizzy, flat or undefined, but you don’t want to start from scratch.
You get light hydration from aloe, a gentle reset from tea tree, and the soothing softness of lavender in one quick mist.
Why it works
- Distilled water lightly rehydrates your curls without overloading them or disturbing your cast too much.
- Aloe vera gel offers slip and a touch of moisture, helping curls spring back into shape and look fresher.
- Tea Tree essential oil supports a clean, comfortable scalp environment, which is especially nice if you’re stretching wash days.
- Lavender essential oil brings a calming scent and can feel soothing and balancing on the scalp and hair.
Recipe
- 1 cup distilled water
- 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel (look for a pure, unscented gel)
- 5 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
- 5 drops Lavender Essential Oil
How to use it on non-wash days
- Pour all ingredients into a clean spray bottle and shake well before each use so the essential oils disperse.
- Lightly mist your curls from mid-lengths to ends, focusing on areas that look frizzy or squashed.
- Gently scrunch to encourage your natural curl pattern to re-form.
- If your roots feel a bit itchy or flat, you can lift sections and mist the scalp lightly, then massage with your fingertips.
I’ve found that using a refresh spray like this is a game changer for high-porosity curls. You’re giving it just enough moisture and support to bounce back, while Tea Tree and Lavender keep your scalp feeling fresh and your curls smelling gorgeous.
Common Concerns: Protein Sensitivity & Buildup
Many people with high-porosity hair also find them be protein-sensitive, meaning protein treatments can leave it feeling stiff and brittle. The beauty of the suggested oil blends is that they are naturally protein-free. They provide the lipids and fatty acids your hair needs for strength and flexibility without the risk of protein overload.
As for buildup, the key is moderation and proper cleansing. If you use oils regularly, be sure to use a good clarifying shampoo once or twice a month to remove any residue and give your hair a fresh start. Listen to your hair—it will tell you what it needs!
Final Thoughts
When you have high-porosity curls, it’s easy to feel like you’re constantly fighting frizz, dryness and unpredictable wash days. I’ve found that the biggest shifts happen when you stop throwing random products at your curls and start building a small toolkit you really trust. If you decide to try these oil blends, start with one or two blends using good-quality carrier and essential oils, and give your hair a few weeks to respond. You don’t have to do everything at once to see a difference. Over time, these little oil rituals become more than “treatments” – they’re a way of taking a few calm minutes for yourself, massaging your scalp, breathing in beautiful plant aromas and reconnecting with your curls as they are right now. Your hair doesn’t have to be perfect to be worthy of that kind of care. And if you do try them, I’d love to hear how your curls respond, so feel free to leave a comment in the box below.
